The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College basketball team started the season with a strong beginning and is keeping up that pace as the season progresses. The Pomeroys have been busy on the road and at home, having already played 17 games this season.

Over Christmas break, the basketball team's season picked up as they played 7 games. They traveled to Iowa on Dec. 12 and 13 to take on Madonna University and St. Ambrose University. Unfortunately, the Pomeroys couldn't get a win. The first home game for SMWC came on Dec. 17 against Spalding University, the defending USCAA National Champions. In a close game, the Pomeroys defeated Spalding with a score of 74-71. SMWC continued with another close game on Dec. 21 against Earlham College. Winning by a single point, the Pomeroys came away with another win. The basketball team took a well-deserved break to celebrate Christmas and returned to practicing at the end of December.

After their break, SMWC came back and traveled to Marion College for a tournament. They played Concordia University on Dec. 29 and Holy Cross on Dec. 30. Concordia handed the Pomeroys a loss with a final score of 61-73, but SMWC came back and defeated Holy Cross the next night with a score of 64-51. On Jan. 3, the Pomeroys played their 2nd home game of the season. A close game against Indiana Tech ended with a loss for SMWC.

When the SMWC community returned, the students came out to show their support for the basketball team in a home game against Earlham College. The crowd cheered on the Pomeroys on Jan. 12, and the team put on quite a show for the fans. SMWC came out on top in the game with a score of 84-56. Junior Brooke Brown led the Pomeroys in scoring with 15 points and brought down 8 rebounds. Sophomore Chelsey Barron added 14 points of her own, while freshman Brittney Shaner put up 13 points. Seniors Rebecca Tracy and Adrienne Blickenstaff both contributed 12 points, and Blickenstaff had 6 rebounds as well.
