Thirteen Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College students spent their day off volunteering for the Wabash Valley Habitat for Humanity on Jan. 18.
A new home was being built for a family that was displaced by Hurricane Katrina and is now living in Terre Haute; Carolyn Sur, SSND and SMWC's campus minister, arranged for the students from the SMWC community to help them. From 8:30 a.m. until around 4:30 p.m. the students worked almost non-stop to be able to complete as much as they could.
"I felt very satisfied that I got to help the family out, and I wish I could do more," freshman Nicole Francis said in an interview.
All the SMWC students who participated worked very hard for a good cause. Some got the chance to learn how to shingle a roof, while some even conquered their fear of heights. Some got to learn how to nail in and measure for outlets and light switches. Others learned how to run wiring throughout a house, including all the drilling, climbing, and pulling that is required for the job.
Junior Briauna Davis stated, "It felt very good being able to help someone when they needed it."
"It was great being able to learn a new skill, and it made me feel very accomplished for the rest of my day," said sophomore Shauna Lampley.
The end of the day left the workers feeling incredibly tired but also accomplished.
