A Feb. 10 event at Indiana State University kicks off a speaker series focusing on sustainability issues. But the series is only one part of a much bigger plan of a Wabash Valley group called Our Green Valley.

Four more events are in the works during the next year, with the venue rotating between ISU, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and Ivy Tech Community College. A website to serve as a hub of information about sustainability efforts and events in the Terre Haute area is also in the works.

The Feb. 10 speaker will be Pat Martin, chief planner of the City of Terre Haute. The event will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in ISU's Holmsteadt Hall, Room 103. The presentation and discussion will last about an hour. There will also be a reception. His topic is "Sustainable Planning, Design and Redevelopment: Terre Haute's Commitment." The event is free and open to the public.

The plans for Our Green Valley began a little more than a year ago when former Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College President Jeanne Knoerle, S.P., invited all who wanted to participate from area colleges and organizations. Knoerle's main question for that meeting was, "What is it that Terre Haute needs to address when it comes to problems with sustainability?" The ideas haven't stopped since.

Attendees at the initial meeting Jan. 15, 2009, came from SMWC, Indiana State University, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, Ivy Tech Community College, the City of Terre Haute, Union Hospital, Vigo County School Corporation, Trees Inc., and The White Violet Center for Eco-Justice.

Forming out of that meeting was the organization called "Our Green Valley Alliance for Sustainability." A lot of questions arose from the first meeting but what was realized was that there was a lot more going on outside of the Terre Haute city limits Knoerle then asked for people in the outside community of Terre Haute to start sending her information about efforts toward sustainability.
