Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and Indiana State University are joining forces on Feb. 9 in honor of Charles Darwin to co-sponsor seminars by Lee Dugatkin of the University of Louisville.
The seminars will be open to everyone in a hope to "increase the publics' awareness of science," said Janet Clark, associate professor of chemistry and chair of SMWC's .epartment of Sciences and Mathematics.
Dugatkin's first speech, "The Alterism Equation: Evolution and the Origins of Goodness," will take place at 4 p.m. Feb. 9 in room 012 of ISU's science building. His second speech will be at 8 p.m. Feb. 9 in Hayes Auditorium in Hulman Hall of SMWC. During his second speech at SMWC, Dugatkin will be discussing his new book "Mr. Jefferson and the Giant Moose," a story that combines science with history and politics.
Why the big hullabaloo this year? According to International Darwin Day Foundation's web site www.darwinday.org, Feb. 12 will be the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth.
