Students at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College have recently voiced their opinions about the advantages and disadvantages of living on campus. Nine out of 10 students interviewed for this article believe that commuters are at a much greater disadvantage than resident students are. Former resident students have moved off campus for financial reasons, while many students still remain content living on campus. Students also show great concern about the policy for visiting hours on campus.
The typical day for a resident student differs greatly from that of a commuter. Resident Ashley Vermillion noted, "Although my home is close, living on campus is convenient for me…I love rolling out of bed five minutes before class and walking right downstairs to where I'm supposed to be."
Several residents say they enjoy getting the few extra hours of sleep and having the necessary facilities nearby in order to complete their homework successfully.
Sophomore Sondra Blake was a content resident during her freshman year. Blake now lives in Clinton with her parents.
"I moved off campus because I couldn't afford it," Blake said. "Last year I lived on campus and I could do what I wanted to-go here, go there." Now Blake's lifestyle is much different, and the change has been somewhat of a challenge for her to adapt to. "It's expensive for gas, I have to get up earlier, I live much further away from Macy's (where I work) and it's a lot further from all of my friends."
Blake also admitted that she feels somewhat out of the loop in the social circle this year. She said she can sometimes very easily tell a resident apart from a commuter just by her social level. "A [commuter] has less knowledge of her classmates, and residents tend to know more people."
Resident Darby Hall told The Woods, "If you ever see a random girl on campus and you don't recognize her, you can probably just say, 'Oh, she's a commuter,' because you never see her any other time than in class."
