When SMWC freshmen Colleen Daum and Annie Jones first pitched the idea of a "Love Your Body" photo shoot in collaboration with The Woods, I jumped at the chance. As the editor-in-chief this year, I'm always searching for creative and interesting stories that will be relevant and interesting to our readers. In my mind, this package is one of the most pertinent and intriguing that we've covered this year.
I'm excited about first-year staff members going out and finding their own stories and ideas. It gave them a chance to enhance their portfolio, as well as let some students open up that normally wouldn't. With body image affecting women of all ages, what could be better than letting some young women boost their confidence and self-esteem without worrying about having the "perfect body?"
Before I introduce the package in depth, I want to give credit where credit is due. The photographers for the shoot were Annie Jones and Colleen Daum. With the help of the Digital Media department at SMWC, they were able to get the right equipment to make this shoot great. Also making a major contribution was Nicole Francis. As a cosmetologist with previous experience, she volunteered her time and talents for the project. Lastly, I would like to thank all of the models who put themselves on the line, knowing that their pictures would be published in The Woods for people to see. Since none of them are professional models, this can take a lot of confidence and trust. I myself wasn't completely sure how the pictures would turn out, and once I saw some of them I had no worries about anyone else seeing them.
What you will find in the "Love Your Body" section of this issue will focus on many different aspects of body image and beauty. From a look at body image through the years to yoga positions that can help keep you fit, I hope there is something for everyone.
Also included are testimonials from some of the models along with their pictures. We felt it was important to let these young women voice their opinions on the photo shoot about how it made them feel. You will find that most of them got an extra boost of confidence from being in the spotlight.
