Ryan White's mother to give talk at SMWC
Jeanne White-Ginder, mother of Ryan White and national advocate for people living with HIV and AIDS, will speak at SMWC Feb. 12, 2009, as part of the College's Four-Star Series. Her presentation, which will begin at 7 p.m. in the Cecilian Auditorium of SMWC's Conservatory of Music Building, is being co-sponsored by the SMWC Student Senate. The Senate is coordinating Health Awareness Week at SMWC Feb. 9-12.
Ryan White was diagnosed with AIDS at age 13 and gained international notoriety fighting for his right to attend school. In the process, he opened the hearts and minds of millions of people. He was, as Ted Koppel described him on Nightline, "an extraordinary young man; brave, tolerant and wise beyond his years."
During the time between his diagnosis in 1984 and his death in 1990, Ryan was featured on numerous television shows and magazine covers and was the subject of a television movie about his life. He became friends with world-renowned athletes and entertainers, including Elton John, Greg Louganis and Michael Jackson, all of whom offered Ryan and his family their support. He spoke out often and eloquently about the challenges he faced and the need for greater compassion towards people with HIV and AIDS. Despite the ravages of the illness to his body and the discrimination he faced, Ryan remained a positive, healing force throughout his life.

Spring play at SMWC Feb. 19-22
The annual spring play at SMWC will be performed Feb. 19-22 in the Cecilian Auditorium of the SMWC Conservatory of Music building.
This year's play is "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie," a comedy-drama about an eccentric teacher who inspires a cult-like following among her "girls" and the administration's desire to force her resignation
The stage adaptation of "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" was written by Jay-Presson Allen and based on the book by Muriel Sparks. The play centers on an eccentric teacher, Miss Jean Brodie, who has an irrepressible drive to "stimulate, enliven and uplift" her students. She instructs them on the ways of life, and ignoring the more mundane subjects, she teaches them of love, politics and art.
Originally set in Scotland during World War II, "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" was adapted into a memorable film starring Maggi Smith. SMWC's production will feature professional actress Delia Taylor as Miss Jean Brodie. Taylor has previously directed two shows at SMWC and also presented numerous workshops. She works as a professional actress, stage manager and director in Washington, D.C., and is currently the producing manager of The Jewish Center Professional Theatre in Washington, D.C.
Show times will be Feb. 19 at 7 p.m., Feb. 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. Discussions with the cast and director will follow the Friday and Sunday performances. There will also be a reception following the Friday performance and discussion.
Tickets for "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" are $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and students. All SMWC students, faculty and staff will be admitted for free. The production does not include adult language or explicit scenes, but there are adult themes, so it is not recommended for children 12 and under.
