The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College basketball team opened their season on Nov. 8 and has struggled to get their first win. Their first 6 opponents have proved tough and have made the Pomeroys give everything they have in order to keep up. One thing is certain though, the new faces to the SMWC basketball team are proving themselves when it counts the most.
For the Pomeroys' season opener, they traveled to UC-Clermont and suffered a tough loss right off. The final score ended with UC-Clermont on top 101-52. Freshman Chelsey Barron contributed not only 10 points in the game; she also added 9 rebounds for the Pomeroys. Senior Amanda Trimble and freshman Jordan Bedella also added another 10 points, while junior transfer student Rebecca Tracy pulled down 7 rebounds.
A tournament at Wilberforce University on Nov. 14 and 15 put the Pomeroys up against Wilberforce and Marygrove College. The game against Wilberforce was another upsetting loss with the Pomeroys coming away with a loss of 106-68. Barron scored an outstanding 24 points in the first game, with Tracy adding 9 rebounds and 15 points to the game.
The game against Marygrove was a close game, but the Pomeroys fell short once again. The final score of 70-83 with Marygrove on top was SMWC's 3rd loss on the season. Barron once again helped out the Pomeroys with 14 rebounds and 12 points. Bedella got 13 rebounds and scored 16 points, and freshman Bailey Birt came in with 12 points to help out the team.
The following weekend the Pomeroys headed to Bluffton University for another tournament. Nov. 21 put SMWC up against the host team, Bluffton University. A hard battle still found the Pomeroys on the wrong end, with a final score of 92-69. Junior transfer student Adrianne Blickenstaff put up 21 points, while Barron scored 14 points and Bedella pulled down 10 rebounds for the Pomeroys.
The next game of the tournament was a faceoff between SMWC and Thiel College. Once again the Pomeroys couldn't pull through in the end, finishing the game with a final score of 54-73. Barron took high scorer and top rebounder with 17 points and 10 rebounds, followed close behind by Blickenstaff who had 11 points and 7 rebounds. Tracy added 7 rebounds and Trimble contributed 12 points to the total.
As the college students headed home for Thanksgiving break, the SMWC basketball team played their first home game of the season against Greenville College. With the Pomeroys leading at the half, hopes were high. In the end they just fell short, finishing off the game with a score of 85-77. Tracy scored 18 points in the game, and Barron once again proved important with scoring and rebounding with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Pomeroys end the first month of the season with a record of 0-6.
While the season got off to a rough start, optimism is still in the air. "I think it's a great group of girls and hopefully we'll make it to Nationals this year," said Barron.
